TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT BEAUTYCOUNTER AND HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THIS AWESOME CO?
Gregg Renfrew, who is a mother of 3, started this company 6 years ago when she learned that the US had not passed a major federal law governing the cosmetics industry since 1938! The European Union has banned or restricted 1,400 ingredients from personal care products and the US only 30. Companies are allowed to put harmful ingredients into their products with no regard for human safety. What's worse is that the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies. Beautycounter is doing things differently as a direct to consumer brand that is also a certified Benefit corporation which puts the people, the planet and profits all equal.
I first learned about Beautycounter when a friend turned me onto the Healthy Living app, which is a wonderful tool from the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) that rates personal care and food products for safety. I started checking all the products my family and I were using and was horrified that many were filled with dangerous and toxic ingredients. I also learned that there are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today, and many don’t have any safety data and studies have shown that serious health issues are on the rise and are due in part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals. That’s when I knew I needed to get involved and share this information with my family and friends. I love being a part of a global movement that is affecting positive change and also making a significant social impact and the income isn’t bad either!
EXPLAIN TO READERS WHY BEAUTYCOUNTER PRODUCTS ARE SAFER AND HEALTHIER FOR THEIR SKIN AND THE ENVIRONMENT THAN OTHER PRODUCTS?
Beautycounter is doing things differently and is leading a movement for change in the personal care industry. In addition to creating the safest products on the market, we educate and advocate for more health-protective legislation and our ingredient selection process is unparalleled. We have created The Never List, which is over 1,500 ingredients that are never used in our products. Our goal is that all beauty should be clean beauty and our mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. We believe that beauty should be good for you and we work to minimize the environmental impacts of our products, packaging, and footprint through our sustainable ingredient sourcing and our recyclable packaging.
THIS MONTH GOING SUNSCREEN-LESS, TELL US ABOUT THE CLEAN SUNSCREEN BEAUTYCOUTNER MAKES?
Our sunscreen lotion is formulated with non-nano zinc and California Poppy that is SPF 30 and protects from UVA and UVB rays. I love that it blends evenly into the skin and goes on clear even though it is a high zinc content. It is also water resistant for up to 40 minutes.
Our sunscreen just won the Allure Magazine Readers Choice Award for the Best Body Sunscreen and is always rated in the top 10 safest and most effective sunscreens by the EWG.
TOP THREE TIPS TO GO SUNSCREEN-LESS?
Choose a sunscreen that is safe for people and the environment. A zinc based formula is best.
You only need an SPF of 30 and it is a myth that you need a higher number. As long as the formula is zinc based you will be protected since zinc is a complete block from the sun.
You want a brand that has protection against UVA and UVB rays since both are harmful and all sunscreen should be reapplied after 40 minutes in the water.
